Cape Town Spurs made it two out of two in their PSL Promotion playoff bid, following their 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs managed to get the game off on the front foot and produced a couple of notable goal-scoring opportunities inside the first five minutes of the match. Sitting back, Maritzburg looked to soak up the early pressure from the home team.

The Urban Warriors pressured the visiting team in the middle of the park and actively searched for openings in the opposition half.

Spurs’ pressure paid off in the 15th minute of the encounter, as Michael Morton found himself in the right place at the right time to pounce on a mistake inside the Maritzburg box.

While having less of the ball possession count, Spurs made it difficult for Maritzburg from a defensive point of view as the visiting outfit struggled to make way inside the Urban Warriors box.

Spurs endured a prolonged period of pressure as the half came to a close, however, the home side held their own and safeguarded their 1-0 lead going into the break.

Maritzburg commenced the second half as the better of the two sides and worried the Spurs defence on a couple of occasions during the first five minutes.

The game entered a tacky period around the 70th minute mark with neither side creating any notable scoring chances. Nevertheless, the Team of Choice remained on the attack and continued to trouble the Spurs backline.

In what has been the story of the second half, the Team of Choice dominated play after the 80th minute as Spurs were reduced to defending on the edge of their box.

The Urban Warriors looked dangerous on the break and often found themselves in one-on-one situations with the opposing goalkeeper. After ending the half on a high, Spurs eventually saw out the game as 1-0 winners at the Athlone Stadium.
