Lions sign Groom

The Emirates Lions have signed Nick Groom from the Northampton Saints until the end of the 2019 season.

Groom, who previously played for the DHL Stormers before moving to England, will make the shift to help the Lions increase their depth at scrumhalf. With Springbok scrumhalf Ross Cronje still injured, the Lions will look to get him involved sooner rather than later.

“My time in England with the Saints has been hugely satisfying on many levels. I’ve learned so much and I’m a better player and person for it. The opportunity to return to South Africa has come a lot sooner than expected but it’s one that I am really excited for. I’ll be joining a great team with high ambitions and I am looking forward to getting started,” Groom said in a statement..

Groom played his entire youth career at Western Province, and represented them 69 times in the Currie Cup, with 57 caps for the Stormers. Since 2016 he has played for Northampton Saints 27 times, scoring three tries in the process.

Groom also represented SA A in 2016.
