Euro Wrap: De Jongh helps Wasps to victory



The rugby continues over the festive period as players formerly based in South Africa take part in Premiership, PRO14 and Top 14 matches.

Former Stormers and Springbok centre Juan de Jongh scored a try for Wasps as they moved in to second place on the Premiership standings with a 31-26 victory over Bath at the Recreation Ground on Friday night.

Flanker Ruan Ackermann, son of Gloucester coach Johan, will be delighted to have gotten one over fellow ex-Lions Faf de Klerk, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Josh Strauss and Jono Ross when the Cherry and Whites overcame Sale Sharks 20-16 at Kingsholm on Saturday.

Former Leopards, Golden Lions and Sharks lock Franco van der Merwe, featured for London Irish in their 15-20 defeat to Newcastle Falcons at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Evergreen ex-Sharks centre Brad Barritt and former Stormers forwards Schalk Burger and Michael Rhodes started for Saracens in their 46-31 home win over Gary Gold's Worcester Warriors featuring ex-Blue Bulls scrum-half Francois Hougaard. Another former Stormer Vincent Koch came off the bench to good effect to make a telling impact at Allianz Park.

Yet another former Stormer scrum-half Nic Groom started for Northampton Saints in their 50-21 defeat to Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop on Saturday while former Western Province loosehead prop and former Sharks scrum-half Cobus Reinbach provided reinforcement on the Saints' bench.

Meanwhile, ex-Golden Lions and Sharks flanker Marco Kotze was on the receiving end as his Agen side were demolished 47-6 by La Rochelle. Former Sharks and Lions loosehead prop Heinke van der Merwe came off the bench for Stade Français in their 22-12 victory over Bordeaux-Begles.

Former Sharks utility back Francois Steyn and former Bulls lock Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg started for Montpellier while Bismarck du Plessis made a substitute appearance in the 29-10 loss to Brive.

Ex-Griquas and Bulls winger Bjorn Basson was on the losing side when his Oyonnax side went down to Racing 92 featuring former Sharks utility back Pat Lambie and former Boland Cavaliers and former Border Bulldogs flanker Bernard le Roux.

Former Stormers wing Cheslin Kolbe and flanker Rynhardt Elstadt as well as former Kings wing Wandile Mjekevu starred for Toulouse as they beat a Toulon side featuring former Cheetahs and Springbok great Duane Vermeuelen as well as ex-Sharks finisher JP Pietersen 18-13.

Ex Sharks duo Rory Kockott and Jody Jenneker played for Castres as they prevailed 31-27 over Clermont in a tight game at Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin.

On Sunday, former Western Province utility forward Don Armand scored a try for Exeter Chiefs as they outclassed Leicester Tigers 30-6.

In other action:

- Blue Bulls stalwart Werner Kruger who has over 120 caps for the Pretoria side, starred for Scarlets as they won at Cardiff Blues.

- Former Cheetahs lock Rynard Landman turned out for the Dragons as they went down to Ospreys on the weekend.
