Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk delivered an astonishing assault in the opening 7.3 overs as the Delhi Capitals piled up a huge total of 257 for four which led to victory by just 10 runs in their IPL match against the Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

Mumbai bravely stayed in the hunt until the end but, with 64 runs required from the final three overs and 25 from the last, it proved beyond them and they finished on 247 for nine.

Tilak Varma was run out for 63 (32 balls) on the first ball of the final over after captain Hardik Pandya (46 from 24 balls) had kick-started the chase in the middle overs. Australian power-hitter Tim David struck three legside sixes in his 37 from 17 balls but the most telling contribution was made by Delhi’s ‘impact’ bowler, Rasikh Dar Salam, who claimed 3-34 and was the only bowler not to concede over 10 runs per over.

22-year-old Fraser-McGurk savaged 11 fours and six maximums during his 84 from just 27 balls and utterly dominated an opening stand of 114 with Abishek Porel (36) before pulling a Piyush Chawla googly to Mohammad Nabi on the deep midwicket boundary.

Fraser-McGurk had a record century well within his sights but there was never a question of him slowing down in pursuit of personal glory as he continued to try and hit every ball for six or four, often in unconventional style.

West Indies ODI captain, Shai Hope, whipped four sixes over the legside during his 41 from only 17 until one against Luke Wood fell into the hands of Varma at deep midwicket but that only brought more trouble in the form of Tristan Stubbs.

Stubbs produced an exhibition of tricks in the 18th over of the innings as he scooped and reverse-paddled English left-arm seamer Wood for five fours and a six, taking 26 runs off the over to further boost the total and leave the bowler nursing an analysis of 4-0-68-1.

Stubbs flicked, nudged and hammered his way to an unbeaten 48 from 25 balls with six fours and two sixes while captain Rishabh Pant struggled for timing yet still contributed 29 from 19 balls before lap-sweeping Jasprit Bumrah to deep backward square leg.

Mumbai’s beleaguered captain, Pandya, bore the brunt of the hitting with his two overs costing a humiliating 41 runs while legspinner Chawla (4-0-36-1) and the excellent Bumrah (4-0-35-1) were the pick of the ‘attack’ and the only two of six bowlers to concede less than 10 per over.

The result leaves Mumbai marooned in ninth place with just six points from nine matches while Delhi move into a four-way tie in second place on 10 points, four behind leaders Rajasthan Royals.
