Zambia secure Ethiopia, Gabon friendlies

Zambia have secured two international friendly matches away to Ethiopia and Gabon to be played on 27 May and 3 June respectively.

Coach Wedson Nyirenda has since announced a provisional list of 29 players from the domestic league to be trimmed down to 23 before the team departs for Addis Ababa.

The squad will regroup in Lusaka from Sunday, 21 May, with departure to Ethiopia scheduled for Thursday, 25 May.

"We have invited 29 players, many of them without national team experience because we want to widen the net. As you know, 13 national team players from Zesco United and Zanaco will not be selected for the Cosafa Cup competition; we have decided to play these two friendly matches so that the players we have invited can get used to the national team atmosphere and learn our philosophy," said Nyirenda.

"Basically we have called this camp to assess the players before we come up with a final squad of 23."

After the Ethiopia friendly, Nyirenda and his charges will not return to Lusaka but will instead fly straight to Libreville for the friendly match with Gabon.

From Libreville the team will fly into Ndola ahead of the 2019 Afcon qualifier with Mozambique on 10 June.
