Home and away – the record of the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal teams Home ground advantage can be a big plus for any team in knockout competitions and the four sides who have been draw to play in their own stadiums in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals will hope it gives them an edge.

TS Galaxy, for example, have taken 26 points in the league at home this season, second only to all-conquering Mamelodi Sundowns, but only eight on their travels. We take a look at the home and away records for each of the sides in this season’s last-8 and whether that gives us a hint of what might occur when the games are played.

QUARTERFINAL 1 – FRIDAY, 19H00

UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
Nedbank Cup Home Record
P10 W8 D1 L1 GF22 GA7
AmaTuks have been a dominant force at home in the Nedbank Cup since 2008, winning 80% of their matches. They drew 0-0 with Maritzburg in 2013 and lost on penalties, and the following year went down 1-0 to SuperSport United. But they have won their other eight home ties, including this season against topflight Cape Town City and Moroka Swallows.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Nedbank Cup Away Record
P25 W19 D2 L4 GF72 GA19
Sundowns have generally been strong on the road, their most famous away victory the 24-0 Last 32 win over Powerlines FC in Kimberley in 2012. Their four defeats have come at Orlando Pirates (0-1, 2011), Maritzburg United (1-3, 2017), Chippa United (1-2, 2019) and Stellenbosch FC (1-2, 2023). They have a 50-50 record in penalties in the two games they have drawn away.

QUARTERFINAL 2 – SATURDAY, 15H00

STELLENBOSCH FC
Nedbank Cup Home Record
P9 W3 D3 L3 GF11 GA11
Stellenbosch have played nine of their 12 Nedbank Cup ties at home and have been a mixed bag to say the least. They have a famous win over Sundowns last year, and also beat Moroka Swallows in that same campaign. But there have also been some disappointing defeats.

SUPERSPORT UNITED
Nedbank Cup Away Record
P25 W12 D4 L9 GF26 GA24
SuperSport United have a positive record on the road in the Nedbank Cup but have been ousted 10 times in the last 16 years in away games. Given the fact they have lifted the trophy three times, it is a big percentage. Four away fixtures have gone to draws and they have won three of those via penalty shoot-outs. That could well be the a scenario against Stellies.

QUARTERFINAL 3 – SATURDAY, 18H00
AMAZULU
Nedbank Cup Home Record
P18 W8 D4 L6 GF43 GA25
Usuthu have certainly not had it all their own way with almost as many defeats as wins at home in the Nedbank Cup, suggesting it is not much of an advantage for them. They did beat amateur side Young Ones 14-0 on their own patch in 2008. They have won three penalty shootouts out of their four drawn games, and have not lost a Nedbank Cup tie outright at home since a shock 3-2 loss to lower league Ubuntu Cape Town in 2018.

ORLANDO PIRATES
Nedbank Cup Away Record
P22 W15 D5 L6 GF52 GA34
Defending champions Pirates have had some difficult away days in the Nedbank Cup, not least their shock 4-1 loss to third-tier Maluti FET College in the Last 32 in 2013. Sundowns have knocked them out twice, while they also have recent penalty shoot-out disappointment in the road with losses to Black Leopards and Marumo Gallants. They have advanced in their last four away ties.

QUARTERFINAL 4 - SUNDAY, 15H00

TS GALAXY
Nedbank Cup Home Record
P4 W1 D2 L1 GF6 GA7
Galaxy have only played four home games in the Nedbank Cup with their entire run to the final in 2019 for their surprise victory filled with games away from home. They have a single win on their own patch against lower league Amavarara, while they lost outright to Stellenbosch last season in an extraordinary 6-3 encounter. Their two drawn matches have both ended in penalty shootout losses to TS Sporting and Baroka FC.

CHIPPA UNITED
Nedbank Cup Away Record
P10 W3 D2 L5 GF15 GA18
Chippa have found it tough going on the road in the Nedbank Cup, with all three of their outright wins coming against lower league opponents – Phiva Young Stars (2-0, 2018), Pretoria Callies (1-0, 2021) and NC Pros (2-1, 2024). They were involved in one of the most extraordinary Nedbank Cup ties when they drew 4-4 away at BidVest Wits in 2019 and won on penalties.
