After scoring their first T20I and ODI victories over Australia during the first multi-format tour Down Under in February, South Africa now face Sri Lanka at home in three T20Is and three ODIs as they build towards the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in September and October.

The meteoric rise of 16-year-old Karabo Meso is continuing with her maiden international call-up to the Protea T20I squad for the Sri Lanka series. The wicketkeeper-batter was included in the team of the tournament after the 2023 ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, following her impressive performance behind the wicket.

Annerie Dercksen and Tumi Sekhukhune are returning to the squad after not travelling to Australia, with Ayanda Hlubi being sidelined with a groin injury. Delmi Tucker and Mieke de Ridder were also not considered for the T20Is.

The squad for the ODI leg will be announced later.

Protea coach Hiltong Moreeng has been quoted as saying he is excited about youngsters like Meso and their performances in international matches.

“We still have the core of the squad to make sure we can continue with what we've been working on regarding the T20Is … There are a few youngsters coming in and one debutant is Karabo Meso who has been part of the High-Performance group and in the U19 World Cup. She is a youngster who's got a lot of potential, and one we're looking to see how she goes when given the opportunity.”

Earlier this year, Moreeng’s contract was extended until the end of the Sri Lanka series after Cricket South Africa initially indicated that a new coaching team would be in place before the Australia tour. The current series is the last competitive cricket for the Proteas before the T20 World Cup in September and October. It is unlikely that a new coach will be appointed, meaning Moreeng’s 12 year-tenure will continue.
