He was out in the 43rd over as Ngidi found the edge of his bat through to wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.

But as good as Rohit was with the bat, he featured in two run-outs involving his captain Virat Kohli and Ajinke Rahane (8).

So often the go-to man in this series for India, Kohli had once again looked good for his 36 although he did survive a tight TV replay decision for a stumping with his score on 28.

Earlier, South Africa made an initial breakthrough with the total on 48 when Rabada had Shikhar Dhawan neatly caught at backward square-leg by Andile Phehlukwayo for an aggressive 34 off only 23 balls.

SOUTH AFRICA: Aiden Markram (capt), Hashim Amla, Jean-Paul Duminy, AB de Villiers, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungisani Ngidi, Morne Morkel, Tabraiz Shamsi

INDIA: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

",
