Ottis Gibson closer to Proteas job

Former West Indian allrounder and current England bowling coach, Ottis Gibson, seems on course to become the Proteas next head coach with captain Faf du Plessis admitting that he has already started his ‘research’ and England coach Trevor Bayliss saying he wasn’t sure whether the switch would happen but “…by all accounts it sounds like it.”

Du Plessis said he had been consulted by the five-man panel, initially several weeks ago.

“There were conversations - the first was when we were asked if we were happy and we said we were. The panel’s decision was to see if there was someone out there to take the team forward and I said Russell was doing a good job but if there was someone out there who can challenge the team more then, by all means, have a look… I don’t know where they are at the moment,” Du Plessis said.

“Articles have come out about Ottis but that’s a board decision. They take the recommendation from the panel.”

Asked whether he had ever worked with Gibson before or heard anything about him as a coach, Du Plessis said: “Honestly I haven’t worked with him so it’s difficult to make comments. I have asked the England team and they have given me positive feedback,” Du Plessis said.

“The players are good judges and they will give honest opinions on their reflections of a guy who will work as head coach. If he is going to be the guy then we’ll have to learn about each other and that relationship will take time.”

Bayliss seemed a little nonplussed by the speculation in the immediate aftermath of a famous and convincing test series win in which his team prevailed 3-1 to beat South Africa for the first time on home soil in 19 years.

“To be honest I only found out from you guys, that’s the first we’d heard of it,” Bayliss said. “There’s nothing been finalised yet. I’m at a loss at the moment whether it’s a go ahead, we haven’t heard for sure. By all accounts it sounds like it.”
