It was a pleasing result for Vodacom WP

It was a pleasing result for Vodacom WP against the Sharks at Newlands the past weekend.

And it was especially more pleasing because of the unbelievable character that was shown by the guys in the face of the adversity of the last few weeks brought on by the massive injury crisis we had at Province.

It is one thing to have a pleasing result, but a completely other one when guys who at the beginning of the season might not have been in the starting line-up step up to the plate and earn the respect of not only their team-mates, but also the fans out there.

I think one of the objectives we wanted to achieve this season was to bring the pride back to playing for Province. We may not win every game for the remainder of the season and we may even be unfortunate not to qualify for the semi-finals, but one thing we need to control is that people should see we play for the pride of WP rugby again and that this team is hugely committed to the province.

I said beforehand we needed to match the Sharks’ physicality if we want to win this game and overall I was happy with the way the guys stepped up to the challenge. It however did become an area of concern in the second half, when they decided to try to physically dominate us at the breakdowns.

They were quite effective with their counter rucking and forced us off the ball a number of times. We made life difficult for ourselves after the good start we had to the game.

We took the foot off the pedal in terms of physical assertiveness and we cannot afford to do that, especially with the Bulls and the Cheetahs coming up.

The Lions did well to beat the Bulls the past weekend and they are two points ahead of us on the log. There is nothing we can do about it. We need to concentrate and focus on our own job and just hope the results will go in our favour.

I am very pleased that we are still in contention for a semi-final place, but I must stress how tough it is going to be.

What is important at this stage of the season - and I am not saying this as a cliché - is that we remain focused on the issues we can control, which is our performance.

We need to try and improve week by week. If we start to concentrate on what the other teams are doing we are in danger of losing focus and we will not be in contention anymore.

At the moment I have only thing on my mind and that is Pretoria this weekend. We are facing the Bulls this weekend and that will be a massive challenge.

They are a great team and they stumbled on the weekend, but they will rebound. They are a well coached and a well-disciplined team and I have nothing but respect for them.

It will be a tough challenge and we need to front up this weekend.

Thanks for your support and hopefully we can come back from Pretoria still in the race for the playoffs.
