Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies will earn his 100th cap for the Emirates Lions this Saturday as they take on the Brumbies in their Vodacom Super Rugby match at Emirates Airline Park.

Jantjies will reach the milestone as coach Swys de Bruin rung the changes in the backline to streamline the Lions' attack and look for more momentum and tries against the Australian side.

The new-look backline continues to have Jantjies as the general, while Sylvian Mahuza and Madosh Tambwe form a potent attack on the wings. But the most intriguing move has to be the inclusion of Aphiwe Dyantyi at outside centre to partner Springbok Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

In the pack Hacjivah Dayimani makes his way back into the starting line-up while Ross Cronje, Crone Fourie, Len Massyn and Shaun Reynolds are all on the bench.

Coach Swys de Bruin spoke at length about the changes, saying some were necessary while others were to give the team some momentum to get back onto the winning path.

“We’re resting Lionel, he has a bit of a groin injury that he picked up on tour,” De Bruin said.

“Harold (Vorster) has got a bit of flu and isn’t feeling too well at this stage so that gives a chance to play Aphiwe at 13. He has played there a lot in his life, he prefers that. Next to Trokkie (Rohan Janse van Rensburg) and then we are sticking with Elton at 10 as the general and Sylvian gets his run on the wing as he did well and we do work on rotation.

“He is back in there. We also are bringing Madosh back in, I feel it was a long tour and he did well at stages and we worked a lot on his confidence, so I’m confident about him as well.

“We want to score tries and have a go. We did work a bit on momentum, they (Brumbies) like to take it forward and we were a bit on the back foot for one or two games so we are trying to rectify that. We are still scoring tries, we scored 17 tries on tour and it is a lot of tries, but we should have pulled off a few more wins. But in try-scoring terms it isn’t too shabby.”

De Bruin was excited about Dyantyi in the midfield and said he would be used wisely.

“I hope so. He is a good player, he has massive talent and the plan is to get him to carry enough ball.”

De Bruin defended the team’s results on the tour.

“You have to look at the whole thing in perspective. We started with a 29-0 win against the Waratahs, which was great and then the second half against the Reds was part of the best rugby we had played. We had a poor first half and we are not proud of how we played. But the rest of the tour, although they started ahead it was touch and go at times. I don’t want to complain, but if one or two of the decisions went our way it would have made a massive difference.

“If you asked me before the tour that if we are in round 12 or 13 that you sit on 31 points and are conference leaders I would have taken it. It is a very tough competition and I don’t know if you saw the cycle, every team beats others and there is nobody running away with the competition. We did say it in the beginning. We are conference leaders and in the fight, that is how we look at it.”

LIONS TEAM: Andries Coetzee, Sylvian Mahuza, Aphiwe Dyantyi, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Madosh Tambwe, Elton Jantjies, Nic Groom; Hacjivah Dayimani, Franco Mostert (captain), Kwagga Smith, Marvin Orie, Lourens Erasmus, Ruan Dreyer, Robbie Coetzee, Dylan Smith.

Replacements: Corne Fourie, Jacques van Rooyen, Johannes Jonker, Len Massyn, Marnus Schoeman, Ross Cronje, Shaun Reynolds, Ruan Combrinck.
",
