Former Rebels coach McGahan joins Reds

Former Melbourne Rebels coach Tony McGahan has been appointed assistant coach at the Queensland Reds on a two-year deal, the Super Rugby team said on Monday.

McGahan left Melbourne after four years in charge at the end of an abysmal 2017 campaign, with the Rebels ravaged by injuries and condemned to finishing last in the Australian conference.

He will join another struggling franchise in the Reds, who managed only four wins under head coach Nick Stiles.

"Being a born and bred Queenslander, joining the Reds is something that has always appealed to my coaching ambitions," McGahan, a former Wallabies assistant and head coach at Irish club Munster, said in a team release.

Stiles said McGahan was a "proven" coach with results around the world.

"He's someone who brings the right attitude and experience and will be a great fit for the Reds," Stiles said.
