Rohan to miss French tests

Springbok midfielder Rohan Janse van Rensburg will miss the June tests after a knee injury, sustained in the victory over the DHL Stormers last weekend, was diagnosed to have required surgery.

Janse van Rensburg sustained a lateral collateral ligament tear and posterolateral corner injury and had pinned his hopes on a diagnosis from a knee specialist this week.

But the news wasn’t good for the midfielder, as he will undergo an operation on Friday and according to a team statement, will be out for approximately 12 weeks.

This will mean he will definitely miss the three tests against France in June and is likely to also miss at least some of the playoff rounds in the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament after the break.

Just how quick he will return to the field depends on his recovery but the injury is a massive blow both to the Lions and Springboks, as Janse van Rensburg was almost a certainty to be selected for the Springbok group after an impressive start to the season.

It complicates things for the Lions as well as they have already lost Howard Mnisi to injury earlier in the season for the entire Super Rugby series and now Janse van Rensburg’s injury means they have to do without two of their most potent attacking weapons.

Harold Vorster is likely to fill the void in the meantime, and had a good run against the Stormers, scoring an impressive try in the process, while Jacques Nel will also be in the mix.

The news comes a day after Jan Serfontein turned down an offer from Bulls and SARU to stay in South Africa, a bold move considering he has 26 test caps. The Boks may have no option but to utilise his services for the French tests and therefore move him closer to the 30 test mark which SARU have set as a benchmark for players plying their trade overseas.
