Blitzboks face Fiji in CWG semis

South Africa’s Sevens side faces one of their toughest assignments yet in their quest to defend their Commonwealth Sevens title when they face Olympic champions Fiji in their semifinal on Sunday.

The Blitzboks, who have had several epic clashes against the Fijians over the years, will have to overcome their nearest rivals in the World Sevens Series if they are to reach the final of this year’s Commonwealth Games tournament.

In the other semifinal England take on New Zealand for a spot in the final, with the semifinals kicking off at 3:41am on Sunday (CAT, GMT+2).

The Blitzboks qualified for their semifinals by downing Scotland 26-5 in their final game to end the pool stages unbeaten. Rosco Speckman scored the opening try with the Blitzboks scoring three times in the second half to put the game beyond doubt.

Ruhan Nel powered his way over, before Cecil Afrika and Justin Geduld followed him in quick succession to secure the semifinal spot.

In the pool games, the late Scottish try was the only blemish on the Blitzboks’ performances as they scored 121 points with only five conceded in three games in the tournament.

But Sunday’s showdown with Fiji will be an epic one, and a lot tougher for the Blitzboks to navigate.

The final is set for 6:59am on Sunday.
