Blitzboks down physical Samoans

Seabelo Senatla scored a brace as the Blitzboks produced a powerful second-half performance to see off a physical Samoan side 26-10 and move into the semifinals of the Dubai Sevens on Saturday.

The Blitzboks will now face their nemesis – South Sea magicians Fiji in the semifinal as they look to take a step closer to defending the title they won last year at the same venue.

The Blitzboks had some tense moments – especially as a much fitter looking Samoa came at them head on, but managed to pull away with the introduction of the bench in the second half.

However, there are some danger signs in the amount of missed tackles and the inability of the smaller starting line-up to manage the game, something that will no doubt get a lot of attention before the semifinal on Saturday afternoon.

Senatla scored both his tries in the first half – one off turnover ball – as the Blitzboks scorched to an early lead, but watched as Samoa clawed their way back to within two points just after halftime with tries by Alamanda Motuga and Faalemiga Selesele.

The second half looked as if there may be a titanic finish on the cards as the Samoans challenged, but a try by Werner Kok and a late score by Tim Agaba sealed the game for the Blitzboks.

Fiji looked impressive, but were a bit ill-disciplined as they beat a brave Scotland 35-24 in the other quarterfinal.

The Cup semifinal will kick off at 2.19pm, all games are live on SuperSport.
