Kings sign Sarel Pretorius

The experienced former Emerging Springbok and Cheetahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius has signed a two year deal to play GuinnessPRO14 rugby for the Southern Kings.

Pretorius, noted for his try-scoring exploits and ability to break open opposing defences in his time with the Cheetahs, joins the Kings from the Newport Gwent Dragons. He has also played Super Rugby for the Waratahs. The Kings have hinted that Pretorius could be the first of several big name signings as they look to become competitive in Europe after a poor first season that was impacted by their late inclusion in the competition.

Andre Rademan, Chairman of the Southern Kings Board, said that the Kings will be looking to strengthen in several areas. The Kings lost the bulk of the squad that was so successful, in relative terms, in the 2017 Super Rugby season because of the long-standing uncertainty over the future of the franchise. One of the many players lost was scrumhalf Louis Schreuder, who left a gap for Pretorius to fill when he departed for the Sharks in the middle of last year.

“We are extremely pleased to have secured the services of a player of Sarel’s abilities and have no doubt he will prove a huge success at the Kings,” said Rademan.

"He is exactly the kind of player we need to add to our young squad. He is exciting and brings a wealth of experience with him."

Pretorius said he had made up his mind to play for the Kings when he toured South Africa with the Dragons a couple of weeks ago.

"The Eastern Cape has always produced great young talent and I am looking forward to the challenge of playing with them and, hopefully, making a difference," said Pretorius.

"It's a good time for my family and myself to go back home."

Kings head coach Deon Davids welcomed the mentoring role that the experienced Pretorius could play.

"Sarel's record speaks for itself and I'm excited about the prospect of having him in our squad, not only because of his playing ability but also because of what our young players will be able to learn from him," he said.
