Euro Wrap: heartbreak for SA stars



Ex-Sharks trio Bismarck du Plessis, Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn as well as former Bulls duo Jan Serfontein and Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg all started for Montpellier as they bowed out of the Champions Cup with a 23-14 loss to Leinster on Saturday.

Springbok No 8 Duane Vermeulen, former Bulls lock Juandre Kruger, ex-Bulls and Cheetahs prop Marcel van der Merwe and former Sharks winger JP Pietersen featured for Toulon as they lost 30-27 to Scarlets in an epic thriller.

Vermeulen scored a try after confirmation this week that he would be heading back to the Stormers at the end of the season as he prepares for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Former Sharks centre Brad Barritt, ex-Stormers prop Vincent Koch and former Stormers legend Schalk Burger started for Saracens in their 62-14 demolition of Northampton Saints, who had former Sharks scrum-half Cobus Reinach in their ranks while former Western Province loosehead prop Francois van Wyk made an appearance off the replacements bench.

Former Stormers lock Jean Kleyn and former Kings fetcher Chris Cloete featured for Munster in their 48-3 demolition of Castres at Thomond Park on Sunday. Ex-Sharks duo Rory Kockott and Jody Jenneker as well as former Cheetahs centre Robert Ebersohn were on the receiving end.

Meanwhile, the large South African contingent on display for Wasps were also on the winning side as ex-Sharks and Cheetahs full-back Willie le Roux, former Stormers number eight Nizaam Carr and former Stormers centre Juan de Jongh all started for Wasps as they beat an Ulster side including Ex-Sharks back Louis Ludik.

Elsewhere, ex-Sharks centre Paul Jordaan was on the winning side as La Rochelle overcame Harlequins.

In Challenge Cup action:

- Zebre loose forward Johan Meyer played as they beat Agen in a high-scoring affair.

- Ex-Blue Bulls loose forward GJ van Velze started for Worcester against a Brive side featuring former Sharks lock Peet Marais and ex-Cheetahs flank Johan Snyman.

- Former Cheetahs lock Rynard Landman turned out for the Dragons as they faced a Bordeaux side that included former Sharks lock Jandre Marais.

- Former Cheetahs and Griquas prop Maks van Dyk started for Toulouse who encountered a Sale side consisting of former Lions flank Jono Ross.

- Ex-Blue Bulls wing Duhan van der Merwe and former Lions fly-half Jaco van der Walt played for Edinburgh against Stade Francais.
