Euro Wrap: Cheetahs claim another win

The Cheetahs were the big success story of the weekend in the PRO14 as they battled past Irish heavyweights Leinster 38-19 in Bloemfontein.

Tries from William Small-Smith, Torsten van Jaarsveld, Ox Nche and Luther Obi saw them pick up a maximum haul that will do their confidence a power of good. That's their second victory out of four in the season so far and the result leaves them in third position in Conference A.

In contrast the Kings endured a difficult day at the office in Port Elizabeth, as they lost out to perennial PRO14 strugglers Zebre, 43-17.

Elsewhere former Sharks flanker Abraham Steyn crossed for Benetton Rugby in their shock win over Ospreys while Ulster were big winners over the Dragons on Friday, running out to a 52-25 success that saw another former Shark, tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst, get over the whitewash.

On Saturday Scarlets beat Edinburgh 28-8 as ex Bull Werner Kruger scored in a victory that keeps them in touch with Ulster in Conference B.

It was a positive weekend for former Lions head coach Johan Ackermann as his Gloucester side kicked off the Premiership round with a 24-19 home victory over Worcester. His son, Ruan, started the fixture in what is the Cherry and Whites' second win from the opening four matches.

Francois Louw's Bath's side in contrast didn't enjoy a good day at the office as they lost 33-32 at home to high-flying Newcastle Falcons. Newcastle are level on points with Saracens in joint second place after the European champions ran out comfortable winners over Sale over the weekend. Faf de Klerk started at fly-half for the Sharks but they were no match for Vincent Koch and company, losing 41-13 on Saturday.

Exeter are the pace-setters in England after they saw off Wasps 31-17 at Sandy Park. Former Cheetahs flanker Ashley Johnson crossed for the visitors but ex Stormers flanker Don Armand was one of five Chiefs try scorers in a resounding win from the reigning Premiership champions.

In other action:

- The Top 14 continued over the weekend and there was a major shock for Ruan Pienaar and his Montpellier side as they suffered a first loss of the season at the hands of Bordeaux-Bègles, going down 47-17. It is worth noting however that Montpellier did name an under-strength XV.

- Former Sharks centre Paul Jordaan crossed for La Rochelle in their 57-12 win over Oyonnax that puts them a point off leaders Montpellier.

- Robert Ebersohn and Rory Kockott's Castres were beaten 31-12 by Lyon while Stade Français fly-half Morné Steyn's 15 points weren't enough to beat Toulon in Sunday's other game. Charl McLeod and Willem Alberts started alongside Steyn with Marcel van der Merwe in Toulon colours.
