Marx on bench as Boks boost Lions

Xerox Golden Lions coach Swys de Bruin has included three Springboks in his starting line-up to face the Toyota Cheetahs in their final Currie Cup league clash in Johannesburg on Saturday.

And De Bruin has added Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx to his bench for the clash as well.

Scrumhalf Ross Cronje, winger Courtnal Skosan and fullback Andries Coetzee will all make their first appearances in this year’s Currie Cup after the Springbok season kept them busy while last week’s standout Marx will play off the bench.

Bok prop Ruan Dreyer failed a fitness test, and it was decided not to risk him for the game.

“Ruan Dreyer didn’t make his final fitness test, he has a bit of a rib problem. We had the choice to inject him and play him but player safety comes first,” De Bruin said.

As for Marx, De Bruin believes off the bench is the perfect place for a player who has featured in every Springbok test this season.

“The beautiful thing of the hooker from the bench, or any front row player is that you can go onto the field and back again. So it will be very nice to have him on the bench.”

The Boks have inspired their teammates, according to De Bruin, and will bring a lot more pace to the game and confidence to the players they will be playing with.

“I must say Tuesday’s practice was great, there was a sense of real urgency. If you have a brotherhood like we have, its like a brother coming back and he just wants to – they all want to start and play but we had to box clever,” he added.

Jaco van der Walt will start at 10 while Robbie Coetzee and Jacobie Adriaanse start at hooker and tighthead respectively. Adriaanse returns after a stomach bug kept him out of action last weekend. De Bruin believes Van der Walt at 10 is a good fit.

“That is a bit tactical, that’s all I can say at this stage. Ashlon Davids is a good youngster and he will come off the bench. He will make impact, he is a running flyhalf. Jaco did very well for us when he played for us in tough games at 10.”

While the Cheetahs have simply copied their Pro14 team into the Currie Cup since the European competition is on a break, De Bruin believes it is an interesting tactic that could well backfire on the Cheetahs.

“I think it was the fact they played Pro14 counts in their favour. They played different brands of rugby. I must just say it is a very interesting thing that you can play in two competitions and then in this one. If they should make the Currie Cup final they will have to back their next best again. Because then they play Pro14 again. It is a very interesting competition, especially as some teams started four or five games later in the competition and had to join the rest of the race.”

“We want to play against the best, and it would have been a real disappointment to play against their B team. Especially with this young team of ours we want to measure ourselves against the best.”
