Lions keep semis hopes alive

The Xerox Golden Lions remained in the hunt for the semifinals by staging a stunning comeback to beat DHL Western Province 29-20 (halftime 10-17) in their Currie Cup Premier Division rugby match at Emirates Airline Park, Johannesburg, on Sunday.

The Lions had their backs to the wall at 20-10 down midway through the second half but three tries in the final quarter some them to their fifth win in 11 matches.

More importantly, the victory lifted them off the foot of the table and into fourth position with the final round of group action coming up next weekend.

The unbeaten Cell C Sharks have already secured a home semifinal but the other six teams will fight it out for the remaining three spots.

Coming into the game, Western Province were looking to secure a home semifinal with a victory in Johannesburg. And they looked good value for a possible win after producing a good first-half performance in driving rain to lead 17-10 at the break.

The visitors scored first-half tries through No 8 Nizaam Carr and flyhalf Robert du Preez, who also added two first-half conversions and penalty.

The Lions replied with a splendid Sylvain Mahuza try scored on the half-hour while fullback Jaco van der Walt added the conversion and a penalty.

There was also a short suspension in play due to a shower of hail but there was a bigger storm to come in the second half as the Lions turned on the charm.

They were great value for money as they ran in tries through left wing Aphiwe Dyanti, replacement Robert Kruger and centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg to claim the full five points.

Western Province could only reply with penalty by Du Preez in the second half.

The Lions will be at home again for their final pool match when they host the Toyota Free State Cheetahs on Saturday.

Western Province face a tough assignment when they travel to face the log-leading Sharks at Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban on the same day.
