Six-try Sharks hammer Griquas

The Cell C Sharks moved up to second place on the Currie Cup log with a bonus-point 41-3 win (halftime 17-3) over the Tafel Lager Griquas at Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Friday.

Having suffered a heavy away defeat to the defending champion Cheetahs in the opening game of the competition, the Sharks bounced back with a 29-0 drubbing of the Pumas last week, before taking care of the Griquas at home.

Former South African Under-20 skipper Jeremy Ward opened the scoring as early as the second minute, when the centre crashed over for the game's opening try, which was converted by his former Grey High School teammate Curwin Bosch.

The young flyhalf added a penalty goal in the 20th minute to take the Sharks into double figures, before Griquas fullback George Whitehead returned the favour moments later to reduced the deficit to seven.

Just seven minutes before half time, powerful winger Sbusiso Nkosi got the first of his two tries, which Bosch converted to allow the Sharks to take a handy 17-3 halftime lead.

Much as they did in the first half, the Sharks got off to a flyer when Jacques Vermeulen crossed the chalk in the 43rd minute, before replacement prop Juan Schoeman grabbed another shortly after to take the Sharks into a near unassailable lead.

The seven-time champions refused to let up and kept their foot on the gas, as Nkosi completed his brace in the 62nd minute.

Fresh off his stint in France, replacement scrumhalf Cameron Wright added his name to the list of scorers with a try one minute from time. Fellow replacement halfback Inny Radebe too got in on the act with a conversion which proved to be the final scoring act of the match.

A fine result for the Sharks, who have grown immensely in the three weeks of the Currie Cup. They now lie second on the log with 10 points, tied with the Cheetahs, who lead by virtue of a superior points difference.
