Potgieter's boot gifts Valke narrow win

Hino Valke defeated the Boland Cavaliers 35-31 in a tough Currie Cup First Division tussle at Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Saturday.

Both sides scored five tries each but the boot of Warren Potgieter proved to be the decisive factor as he converted everything off the tee. The home side's five tries include a penalty try.

The home side bounced back with a brilliant performance to secure a bonus-point victory after last week's 13-9 away loss to SWD Eagles. This, however, was Boland's second successive loss after securing victories in their opening two weeks.

A brace from Alcino Izaacs and tries from Jovelian De Koker, Gerrit Van Wyk and Charles Mayeza for Boland just weren't enough for the visitors.

Tries for the Valke, which includes a penalty try, were scored through a brace from Shane Kirkwood and one try each for Friedle Olivier and Coert Cronje.

Only two converted tries each in the first half allowed for a solid platform to be laid for the second half.

Kirkwood got over the whitewash for the first of his two tries while De Koker dotted down for the visitors. Nel added the extras while his opposite number and Valke pivot Potgieter converted Kirkwood's first try.

Despite a brave effort from the visitors deep into the second half, it was the boot of Potgieter that separated the two sides after the fulltime whistle.

Consecutive passages of play saw the visitors advance into Valke territory but the defence of the home side held firm despite leaking through three tries in the second half.

The accurate kicking of Potgieter gave the Hino Valke an edge over the visiting side not only on the scoreboard but in confidence with ball in hand.

Three tries from each side in the second 40 testifies of an ensuing battle that could have swung in either team's favour.

Sensational outside centre Izaacs was in exceptional form in the midfield for the visitors. Izaacs was complemented by Edwin Sass and flyer Mayeza. The right wing also got onto the scoresheet for Boland.

But it was the home side that had the final say in a very close match, only two conversions separating the Hino Valke and Boland Cavaliers, in the end.
