Let`s Play Playing Field Project


Our children are growing up without the benefits that regular activity offers: good health, fitness, physical skills, increased immunity, nutritional awareness, improved body image, confidence, social skill development and the making of friends. Regular sports activity produce better academic results and kids are less likely to become involved with negative influences.

Let’s Play aims to elevate awareness of this social crisis and to introduce and encourage play, activity and sport in schools.

The situation:

In 2014, there were approximately 25 700 ordinary schools in South Africa with 12 655 436 learners (Ref Education Statistics 2014) It is estimated that only a third of these schools have playing facilities, of which 75% are not being used effectively.

In light of this, the SuperSport Let’s Play partnership with the Department of Basic Education Schools Infrastructure Priority Project will contribute towards ensuring that the future children of our country get an equal opportunity to play and thereby develop into strong and healthy young children. The Let’s Play initiative was developed not merely for the sake of good corporate citizenship, but for the good of our nation and its future generations.

Most relevant to this partnership is the Let’s Play Playing Field project. Together with Builders and Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa, Let’s Play aims to add value to the Schools infrastructure priority project via the transformation of playing facilities at selected schools.

Hitachi will add immense value to the project by means of ensuring surface clearing and thereby providing the initial “playing surface” at the schools and communities.

Let’s Play will teach basic movement and co-ordination as well as develop sporting skills, age-specific activities and regular monitoring of physical development in the target schools.

An additional component to the project is the ‘Builders Cup’ – community schools participate in a 7-a-side soccer tournament leading up to the handover of the facility to the identified school. Activity includes Physical Education.

Programme Objectives:

• Let’s Play will teach basic movement and co-ordination as well as develop sporting skills, age-specific activities and regular monitoring of physical development on the newly created playing fields at the target schools.
• Through the provision of playing surfaces and the transformation of the school and community, offering a unique opportunity to mitigate violence in schools, increase productivity and opportunities for play.
• The project seeks to use sport as a vehicle to transform schools and school communities into child-friendly environments.

The Project commenced on 4th March 2013 and has rolled out to 19 schools so far:

3. Lion Park Primary School in Cosmo City (Gauteng)
4. Katlego Intermediate School in Daveyton (Gauteng)
5. Phuthini Secondary School near Estcourt (KZN)
6. Isago Primary School near Kimberley (OFS)
7. Xhunkwesa School in Plaatfontein near Kimberley (OFS)
8. Sicelo Primary School, Meyerton, Gauteng.
9. Lethabo Primary School near Heidelberg (Gauteng)
10. Mkulu Combined School near Middleburg (Mpumalanga)
11. Beang-Tse-Molemo Secondary School in Reddersberg (OFS)
12. Windmill Park High School, Boksburg.
13. Aquadene Secondary in Richards Bay.(KZN)
14. Kagisho Secondary in Phahameng, Bloemfontein
15. Inkatha-ka-Zulu Primary in Daveyton (Gauteng)
16. Stretford Primary School, Orange Farm.
17. Lithuli Combined School, Seshego, Polokwane
18. Tekwane Primary School, Mpumalanga
19. Fraaisig Primary School, Knysna

Monitoring and Evaluation

A full assessment is conducted for each school and surrounding community to measure the sustainability and impact of the project. An initial assessment is completed with a follow up assessment 6 months after the playing field has been handed over to the respective school. Matrix indicators include:

• Prevalence of risky behaviour within the school
• Changes of learner behaviour since the inclusion of play and play facilities.
• Teenage pregnancy levels.
• Influence of Let’s Play upon the community
• Number of children from the community that benefit from the project
• Number of children from the community that participate in the coaching programme.
