Mwepu itching for Portugal, World Cup

Winger Enock Mwepu believes Zambia will hold their own at the 2017 Fifa Under-20 World Cup after learning who their tournament opponents will be following Tuesday’s draw in Suwon.

The 2017 under-20 Africa Cup of Nations champions with face Iran, Costa Rica and two-time champions Portugal in Group C of the tournament that South Korea will hosts from May 20 to June 11.

“The draw is tough but it is not like they are easy games at this level. We qualified to the World Cup so we are equally as good.” Mwepu said.

Zambia will face Portugal in the Group opening game in Jeju on May 21.

“Portugal is a good team but this is a competition and we just have to be prepared,” Mwepu said.

“We want to do our best after all, aren’t we African champions?”

Zambia will take on Iran in their penultimate Group C game on May 24 at the same venue.

Beston Chambeshi’s team Zambia will close their preliminary stage fixture against Costa Rica at Cheonan on May 27.

This will be Zambia’s debut meeting against any of their Group C opponents in what will be Young Chipolopolo’s third Fifa U20 World Cup appearance.

Zambia exited at the group stage of the 1999 tournament held in Nigeria and reached the last 16 in 2007 in Canada.
