Cranes receive December accolades

Cecafa captain Hassan Wasswa has reiterated the Cranes’ resolve not to give up even when chords have not connected for Uganda lately.

Wasswa was speaking after receiving a plaque and Shs500,000 on behalf of the Cranes at a Nile Special Uspa dinner organised for the team in Kampala on Friday night.

“We understand when the fans are angry but they should also understand that more than anyone else we wanted and want to qualify,” he said.

The Cranes were voted by the sports scribes body, Uspa, as the best performers for the month of December in which they beat Kenya 2-`1 to lift the record-breaking 13th Cecafa title in Kampala.

But one after another botched international campaign coupled with several Cecafa triumphs has left Ugandan fans with a sense of nostalgia and some to near resignation. However, Wasswa insists there is more to look forward to.

“We have the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and Chan to focus on and we should not lose hope.

“As players we remain committed to the cause and we shall continue giving our best and improving ourselves. Someday, we believe we shall qualify.”

Uganda travel to Monrovia in March for their World Cup qualifying encounter with Liberia before home-based players take on Tanzania in the first leg of the Chan qualifiers.
