Duo talk tough ahead of Super 4 final

Delta Queens defender Maria Nwoko and Nasarawa Amazons captain and defender Mariam Ibrahim have insisted on winning the coveted Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Super 4 competition trophy.

The top-flight teams will square up for the NWPL Super 4 final on Friday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo state.

The Asaba landladies held the Lafia side to 2-2 draw in Thursday’s final day round robin stage clash to finish second on five points, two behind leaders Nasarawa Amazons, while Bayelsa Queens came a distant third on two points, with title holders Rivers Angels at the bottom on a paltry single point.

Nwoko said her side are in the Super 4 final not to make mere appearance, but to lift the coveted trophy.

“I feel excited qualifying for the NWPL Super 4 competition. I feel we have met the target getting to the final.

“And being in the final means we are getting close to the trophy and getting close to the trophy shows that we will take the trophy back home.

“A hungry man is an angry man as the saying goes. That is the driving force and motivation to go for the trophy.

“Rivers Angels' ouster did not pave the way for us to gun for the title. I can say the side have been just privileged winning the title severally in the past, as nobody’s name is written on the trophy.

“I actually do not feel happy getting into the final but feel happier lifting the trophy, and like our motto says, ‘God will turn and turn until it gets to our turn’. This is our turn and we will not allow the rare opportunity to slip off our hands,” said the Super Falcons strongwoman to supersport.com.

Ibrahim said outright that her side will come up with their best ever performance, aimed at lifting the trophy.

“I feel very happy that we emerged top after the round robin stage amassing an impressive seven points – two wins and a draw.

“We are determined to continue on the near flawless performance, so come tomorrow (Friday) we will lift the trophy.

“I think we are already getting the desired results and it makes me feel personally happy.

“You are going to see the best and finest of Nasarawa Amazons against Delta Queens in the final on Friday.

“I’m positive that we will emerge winners after 90 minutes football contest,” said the Nasarawa Amazons strongwoman.

The ceremonial match involving the hosts state team, Edo Queens versus FC Robo Queens, will herald the final later in the day.
