Super 4 captains talk tough

The Nigeria Women's Premier League (NWPL) Super 4 competition kicks off on Monday in Benin City, Edo state.

The Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) prime competition will be competed among the quartet of Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and title holders Rivers Angels.

All the matches will be held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo state.

Captains of the sides, namely Esther Udegbe (Bayelsa Queens), Joy Jegede (Delta Queens), Mariam Ibrahim (Nasarawa Amazons) and Charity John (Rivers Angels) have voiced their teams' determination to emerge winners of the annual competition that will confirm the Nigerian champions for the season.

Udegbe said her side are in Benin City to correct the mistakes that have cheated the Yenagoa team of winning the coveted trophy several times in the past.

“We are here to do our very best to do the necessary aimed at achieving our lofty goal which is to make our state proud and win the title.

“We want to redeem ourselves and make amends for past errors that have cheated us from winning the title in several attempts in the past.

“The four teams are good and evenly matched so we are not scared to take on any of them on the field of play.

“We are not even thinking of revenge following our Aiteo Cup semifinals clash loss to Rivers Angels. That one is gone, we are faced with the NWPL Super 4 competition,” said the Restoration Girls strongwoman to supersport.com.

Jegede said although Benin City looks almost like home for her side, they are damn ready to face the expected challenges from other teams.

“We are here to win the NWPL Super 4 competition. Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and Rivers Angels are good teams with quality players.

“We are looking forward to a healthy and keen contest. At the end of the day the very best team will emerge winners.

“Of course, we have everything it takes to win the Super 4 competition, good players even though some of them are held back in school.

“Yes, Benin City is like a home to us but I do not think it will confer any special advantage to us compared with other teams.

“We will work hard to earn our deserved respect on the field of play from other teams,” said Jegede to supersport.com.

Ibrahim said her side will show off their intention for the NWPL Super 4 competition by picking the first three points in the first game against Bayelsa Queens.

“That we lost the Aiteo Cup clash to Bayelsa Queens does not mean we do not know how to play football or that Bayelsa Queens are superior. We had challenges that affected our performance.

“That’s history right now as we are faced with another opportunity to make amend in the Super 4 competition.

“We are going home with the Super 4 title but we will demonstrate our determination in that direction by winning our first game against Bayelsa Queens, then take it up to the final.

“We do not feel inferior or disadvantaged in Benin City over other teams that are mainly southern teams.

“We are here for the game, we just pray for fair officiating for all the teams. We are sure to take any opposition out,” said the Lafia side strongwoman to supersport.com.

John said her side are here to defend their title as well as prove their superiority over other teams.

“We are here to surprise fellow NWPL Super 4 teams. We will take it a game at a time and at the end of the day we will pick the Cup.

“We are the defending champions and we will do the needful to successfully defend the title.

“We have the quality to go ahead to achieve our goal,” said John to supersport.com.
