Mathias not content with goals thus far

El Kanemi Warriors attacking midfielder Samuel Mathias has said he did not hit the goal mark set for himself in the first stanza of the ongoing Nigerian top-flight.

The former Kano Pillars marksman scored 10 goals in the 19-week-old top-flight, four goals behind leader, Stephen Odey of Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC.

Mathias said he is determined to work hard on his goal scoring ability to be able to hit his 20-goal end of season target.

“Well, I hoped to end the first term with 14 goals but eventually ended with 10 goals.

“Man proposes while God disposes. I must give thanks to the Almighty God for the humble achievement.

“However, I must state outright that I’m not in competition with anybody for the top scorer’s gong. I want to better and improve on my game.

“That said I still have a personal target to score 20 goals overall in the ongoing top-flight.

“It looks a daunting task but with God all things are quite possible,” said the Maiduguri Warriors’ hitman to supersport.com.

Mathias said that his side’s target was to finish the first part of the campaign at the summit.

“Prior to the commencement of the league we made a promise to ourselves to fight hard to finish the first stanza on the number one spot, but when the curtain fell we saw ourselves on the third spot.

“God knows the best as we have calmly accepted the first term end result in good faith.

“We, however, believe that God who helped us to the third position will surprise us with the number spot at the end of the season.

“We will continue to work hard to ensure our lofty dream is achieved at the end of the season,” said Mathias.

El Kanemi Warriors on Thursday announced a one-week break for the players and coaches to rest in anticipation of a tougher second stanza campaign.

Warriors are third on the 20-team top-flight with 33 points, two behind league leaders Plateau United.
