Tinkler warns against complacency

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has warned his player not to drop their level when they face Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League side Acornbush United in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 at the Kabokweni Stadium on Sunday.

City are coming off an excellent 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns that has kept their league title hopes alive, but Tinkler says the Nedbank Cup is also crucial for the club and they must not underestimate their minnow opponents.

“They [Acornbush] are having a good season, are top of their league and haven’t conceded a lot of goals. We know their strengths and weaknesses and must prepare in the right manner as it is important for us to get through,” Tinkler said on Thursday.

“I have explained that to the players and reminded them that this game will humble you. We have come off a very good result and that they must apply themselves in the right manner.

“Our preparation will be no different to games against Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, we will utilise players we believe in.

“We will make changes to the squad, but we won’t go crazy. Not eight or nine changes, but changes to benefit us mentally and tactically. For example, Lebogang Manyama will play. He is our captain and he must be involved.

“It would be easy for us to be complacent after the result against Sundowns, but I will try to prevent that. It is very important that we come through this fixture.”
