Benni praises quality of new squad

New Cape Town City boss Benni McCarthy praised the work ethic and the quality of his players on Tuesday as he looked ahead to the club’s opening game of the new season.

“I couldn’t have gone into battle for my first game with a better bunch of guys. They have been superb. Super professional, very helpful and willing to learn,” he told reporters at a press conference as City ready to take on Polokwane City at home on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the MTN8.

“They have made my job just that little bit easier because they are disciplined, there are no big egos in the team. I didn’t have to have any one-on-ones where I needed to put players in their place. I’m a tough cookie, a tough character and you all know footballers have egos but this team have been so good. Maybe a little too nice for my liking!”

The new City boss, who has take over from Eric Tinkler, also said he was happy with the quality of the squad.

“There’s a lot of quality but, listen, if you can add more quality players, why would you want to stop there? The more quality you have the better the chance you give yourself.

"For now, I’m very happy with the squad but if another couple of additions come I, I would welcome them. Just to have a little more because it’s going to be a long season with a lot of competitions that the club is involved in. A bigger squad with more quality and depth is better for me,” McCarthy added.
