Thika compound Tusker woes

Reigning Kenyan Premier League champions Tusker’s poor start to the season continued on Sunday when they lost 2-0 to Thika United.

The loss brews more pressure inside the Tusker stable with coach George Nsimbe now squarely in the spotlight as the brewers are winless in 2017.

The tactician was left dejected with his opening results since taking over from Paul Nkata, but he remains defiant the tide will change.

“I don’t even know what to say. We will just have to sit down and analyse the whole team because there must be a problem. I think today we played well but we did not get the goals,” the Ugandan coach said after the game.

Thika managed to bounce back after last weekend’s heartbreak where they lost to Mathare United with a late goal.

“It is a result that gives us some confidence moving forward. But this is just the start. There are 32 more matches to play and hopefully we can improve from this performance heading into the next match,” Thika coach James Nandwa said.

The hosts were into the lead just three minutes into the match when Eugene Mukangla nodded the ball home from a Salim Mzee assist. It was a reprieve for Thika and winger Benson Iregi who in the build-up to the goal had missed a one on one with David Okello.

From the rebound, Mzee lifted the ball into the area and an unmarked Mukangula finished off. Throughout the first half, Tusker never threatened the Thika side despite having their top striker Allan Wanga back.

The forward had his side’s only chance of the game, a free kick from the edge of the area which was wide. Twice late in the first half, Salim Mzee missed glorious opportunities to add to his side’s tally. In both instances he blasted the ball over after being one on one with the keeper.

Substitute Mwinyi Kibwana finished off the job in the 80th minute when he lifted the ball over an advancing Okello from an Iregi assist.
