Muhoroni win, Sofapaka lose in Sony

After their reinstatement to the Kenyan Premier League by the Sports Disputes Tribunal, Sofapaka and Muhoroni Youth had contrasting results in their first matches of the 2017 season.

Muhoroni were 1-0 winners at home against newly promoted Kariobangi Sharks despite finishing the match with 10 men while Sofapaka lost by a similar margin to Sony Sugar in Nakuru.

Sam Ssimbwa, with a totally new Sofapaka side, had hoped to mark a return to the Kenyan top flight with a win, but his side came short of a Sony side which was all out to get a victory after last weekend’s 2-0 derby loss against Chemelil.

Substitute George Abege came off the bench to score the winner in the second half.

The former Bandari man found his way into the box before shooting low past Kigonya to break the deadlock. It had been a competitive match between the two with both having chances to score.

Sofapaka’s Paul Odhiambo was the first to test the keeper with a shot which was easily picked up while on the other end, Lewis Rampei forced Kigonya into a save that resulted into an unused corner.

In the second half before Abege’s winner, Sony had gone close with Rampei’s shot coming off the crossbar.

In Muhoroni, Ambrose Ayoyi slotted home from the penalty spot in the second half, taking responsibility on his own shoulders after being brought down by Geoffrey Shiveka.

Muhoroni had paraded an entirely new team after most of their first-team stars left at the close of last season, but they never showed any signs of a disjointed force.

Sharks on their side remain winless in their maiden Kenyan Premier League sojourn having lost their opening match 3-1 to Gor Mahia last weekend.
