KPL week 12 preview

After a woeful start to life in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), Mombasa sides Congo United and Bandari continued their resurgence in Round 12 as Tusker returned to the top of the congested summit.

Thursday 19th May

Sofapaka Vs Karuturi (Nyayo Stadium)

Despite their rich form in the CAF Confederations Cup, 2009 KPL winners Sofapaka have a game in hand but their indifferent league displays sees them in mid table. Their clash against second from bottom Karuturi gives coach Francis Kimanzi the chance to record his second league victory while opposite number James Nandwa is under immense pressure to deliver results.

Our Prediction: 2-1

Saturday 21st May

AFC Leopards Vs Sony Sugar (Nyayo Stadium)

New Leopards coach Nick Yakhama has completed the set of results with a win, draw and loss since he took charge with his side comfortable in eighth on 16 points. Their strike force of Itubu Imbem and Demonde Selenga are however, in the middle of a goal drought and are seeking to open their account. Sony Sugar have steadied their ship with a series of draws and will be fighting for a win away from home with young Joshua Oyoo and Isaiah Omondi having to carry the burden of scoring.

Our Predictions: 1-1

Sunday 22nd May

KCB Vs Karuturi (City Stadium)

Karuturi will be playing their second match in two days facing a KCB side that have surprised both friends and foes by winning consistently and just two points shy of league leaders Tusker. Joint top scorer Clifford Alwanga will be seeking to add to his tally of seven with Hussein Puzzo providing the partnership upfront.

Our Prediction: 2-1

City Stars Vs Ulinzi Stars (City Stadium live on SuperSport 9)

City Stars under coach Ken Odhiambo have found it hard this season languishing at the bottom of the table but it’s important to note that they have been also giant killers beating Gor Mahia and Sofapaka. So will they manage another giant slaying act against the invigorated champions Ulinzi that are improving game by game with the likes of Stephen Waruru and Mike Baraza netting important goals?

Our Predictions: 1-3

Mathare United Vs Chemelil (City Stadium live on SuperSport 9)

Mathare United’s coach Salim Ali has quit national team Harambee Stars to concentrate on his team that has had a poor run this season. They sit 12th and are desperate for a win after several losses and draws. On the other hand new Chemelil coach Edward Manoah will also be seeking victory in his second game after last week’s draw.

Our Prediction: 2-1

Sofapaka Vs Congo United (Nyayo Stadium)

Gideon Selebwa has instilled back confidence in Congo United since he took charge and this is the momentum the Mombasa side will present Sofapaka who are yet to get firing in the league. Last season’s top scorer, John Baraza’s fortunes in front of goal have mirrored his clubs’ receding form and the match against Congo represents him with what in theory is one of the easiest defences to navigate.

Our Predictions: 2-1

Rangers Vs Thika United (Nyayo Stadium)

Third placed Rangers have remained among the top teams despite financial difficulties the sponsor-less club is facing. The welcome back their top scorer Kevin Ochieng whose effective combination with Joseph Nyaga has brought in the goals that has been complimented by a solid backline. However, it will be interesting to see how Thika, who have also been in good form, will perform with top scorer Moses Arita the man to watch as he has been scoring in virtually all the matches he has started.

Our Prediction: 2-2

STAR MATCH: Gor Mahia Vs Tusker (Mumias Complex)

Gor Mahia for the first time in the season have taken their home match to Mumias Complex over 500km away from their traditional home of Nairobi. After fighting to a draw with Sofapaka in an entertaining match, K’Ogalo take on the league leaders keen to continue with their good run at the top. Tusker will be depending on Dennis Mukaisi who has had a quiet time in the past four matches for the goals but their midfield has also weighed in with crucial strikes whereas Gor coach Zedekiah Otieno will task Ezekiel Odera and Eliud Lavatsa to provide the firepower.

Our Prediction: 2-2

Western Stima vs Bandari (Bukhungu)

Western Stima have lost three matches and drawn one putting a lot of pressure on coach Henry Omino with fans demanding for results. Their lift is Wesley Kemboi timely return to shape with goals and his partnership with veteran Francis Chinjili will be the bait Omino will be using to fish the three points. Bandari on the other hand managed a win with new coach Rishadi Shedu on his debut and the Mombasa side will once again look up to striker Abdulwahab Musa to continue with his fine run in front of goal.

Our Prediction: 2-1
