Abushnaf fires Libya into the last eight

Libya defeated Rwanda 1-0 in their final 2018 African Nations Championship (Chan) Group C game at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier, Morocco on Tuesday.

As a result, the Mediterranean Knights advance to the quarterfinals after finishing second in Group C, while third-placed Amavubi bow out of the tournament.

Amavubi made a bright start to the game as they looked to break the deadlock in the opening stages of the match.

The East African side won the first corner of the game, but Libya dealt well with it three minutes into the clash.

Libya had a chance to take the lead from a free-kick in a promising area in the 19th minute. But, Abdulrahman Ramadhan Khalleefah failed to score from the set-piece as Rwanda cleared their lines.

The Mediterranean Knights then took control of the match and they piled pressure on the Amavubi defence.

However, the Rwanda back line - which was marshalled by Rayon Sports defender Eric Rutanga - stood firm and the score was 0-0 at the interval.

Rwanda coach Antoine Hey, who was appointed last year, made the first change of the game nine minutes after the restart.

Barnabé Mubumbyi came on for Djabel Manishimwe as Amavubi searched for the opening goal of the match.

As things stood, Libya would be knocked out of the tournament and coach Omar Al-Maryami decided to introduce striker Elmutasem Abushnaf in the late stages of the game in attempt to swing things in the 2014 Chan champions favour.

Khalleefah had a chance to snatch a late winning goal for the Mediterranean Knights, but the forward placed his effort over the crossbar from close range.

Pressure mounted on the Amavubi defence in the closing stages of the game and Abushnaf proved to be a super-sub as he grabbed a goal in stoppage time for Libya, who won 1-0.

The North African nation join Nigeria in the knockout stages. The Super Eagles dispatched Equatorial Guinea 3-1 at the same time to top Group C.
