Matsatsantsa eye Mazembe scalp

SuperSport United have set their sights on completing the perfect week as they prepare to welcome TP Mazembe to the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Tuesday evening, for what promises to be an explosive 2017 Caf Confederations Cup clash.

Kick-off is at 7pm CAT.

A mere four days ahead of their Nedbank Cup final showdown against Orlando Pirates in Durban, Matsatsantsa play host to the defending Confederations Cup champions with the aim of keeping hold of their place atop Group D.

The South African side lead proceedings after three rounds of fixtures following an impressive 2-2 draw away to the Democratic Republic of Congo giants last time out.

Goals from Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena sealed the come-from-behind result in Lubumbashi.

With head coach Stuart Baxter to officially leave the hot-seat at the end of the week, following his appointment as the head coach of Bafana Bafana, the Pretoria club will be eyeing the perfect send-off.

A rather disappointing season, that culminated in a fifth-place finish on the Absa Premiership standings, could receive some late gloss with the club having shown great determination on the African continent.

Before their impressive result in the DRC, SuperSport had defeated CF Mounana 5-3 in Gabon.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, though, is wary of the fact that the Ravens will be eyeing revenge in the South African capital.

"I am sure they are still disappointed because the game at their home ground, their fans turned against them and started cheering for us," said Williams.

"Obviously that didn't sit well with them and they will come here and be eager to get one back over us.

"But we are going to be rock solid. This is perfect preparation for us heading into this weekend's clash - we are just going to go out there and do our best," the goal-minder concluded.

Caf CC top-scorer Jeremy Brockie added: "It is taxing to play Mazembe and Pirates within five days.

"But facing a strong team like Mazembe before the cup final is good for us," the New Zealand international further stated.

Mazembe, who have recorded three successive wins since their draw at home to SuperSport, sit tied on five points with Matsatsantsa and Guinea outfit Horoya after three rounds of fixtures.

Adding to their Caf CC crown, Mazembe have five Caf Champions League titles in their trophy cabinet.
