Ellili praises Eguma’s tactics

Club Africain head coach Chiheb Ellili has praised the tactics adopted by Rivers United in Sunday’s Caf Confederation Cup clash between the two sides in Tunis.

The Tunisian club won the contest decided at Stade Olympique de Radès 3-1 courtesy of strikes from Bilel Ifa, Oussama Darragi and an own goal from Joseph Douhadji while John Odumegwu plundered United’s consolation.

Despite masterminding a victory for the Tunisian club, Ellili was however highly impressed by the Nigerian side and the tactics employed on the day.

“Rivers United is a good team. They have fast players who are quite impressive with and without the ball.

“They pushed us a lot to stay in the final 30 metres and their players were more aggressive than us in the second half,” he told supersport.com.

The trainer then took the time to discuss Emeka Ogbugh’s penalty miss in the second half.

If the United striker had scored, it would have reduced the deficit to 2-3 with just over 11 minutes to play but Ellili claimed the failure of the Rivers United attacker to score from 12 yards was not decisive.

“It is nothing unusual for penalties to be missed because even the most famous players in the world miss penalties.

“We were leading 2-0 when Rivers United pulled a goal back to make it 2-1.

“At that moment, we felt our dignity had been hurt and if that penalty had been converted, we would have reacted again and scored a fourth goal.

“This is the first time I am watching (Rivers United) play and I like the kind of football they displayed.

“I liked their kind of football with movement; permutations, with fast passing; looking for the third player; I like this,” he said.

Club Africain and Rivers United return to Caf Confederation Cup action next Wednesday with respective fixtures against KCCA (Uganda) and FUS Rabat (Morocco).
