MultiChoice Diski Challenge you beauty!

The Multichoice Diski Challenge is the best thing to ever happen to South African football development.

The tournament develops young players, referees and television production crew as well. What more can the country ask for? For those with football as our heritage, we spent our Heritage Day not braaing but being “braaied by the sun” as we cheered on the youngsters who showcased their skills.

It was a day well spent. It felt like the Fifa World Cup had just come back to South Africa. I was sitting with a good friend of mine, Ernest Fakude, who is a journalist. He said there are three top leagues in the country - the PSL, Diski Challenge and Varsity Football in that order. I couldn’t agree more. The ambience at the Diski Challenge is second to none. Those who have been there will attest to that.

I was, however, disappointed by the clubs’ marketing officials, who seem happy with empty stands at the PSL matches. I mean, the crowds at the Diski Challenge are the future fans of our football and clubs should take advantage to develop for them the same way they do with players.

MultiChoice has created an environment for development of footballers, broadcasters and fans, who are students from various schools. It is now up to the clubs to grab the opportunity to sell their brands to these young and vibrant fans.

With the Olympics set for 2016 in Brazil, the national Under-23 coach’s worries of where he will gather players to make up his team are gone. With the Diski Challenge the Under-23 coach just has to bring his notebook and watch five matches to pick the cream of the country, all in one place.

South Africa have been drawn against the winner of the Swaziland and Zimbabwe match. Should Baby Bafana Bafana win, they will face Senegal and another win will take them to the Caf Under-23 Championship finals in Congo DR next year.

Even the fans can select the national Under-23 side. I mean they get to see all these players in the Diski Challenge.
