Safa boss meets next Bafana coach

Safa is making final touches to name the new Bafana Bafana coach later this week to replace Shakes Mashaba whose contract was terminated in December.

In an interview with supersport.com in Lusaka at the ongoing Afcon U20, Safa president Danny Jordaan revealed that he is meeting the chosen candidate on Monday afternoon to finalize the matter.

The new coach has many a time been referred to as the “white shirt” but Jordaan has insisted on the need to maintain confidentiality in the dealings in respect of the vying candidates having running contracts.

“We are now looking at coming to some conclusion in the next few days and we shall have a coach sooner rather than later,” Jordaan explained.

“We are happy with the process but the process gets complicated because everybody gets involved. All the media gets involved. They have a shortlist and every newspaper has a shortlist different from the other one.”

“When people consider a new job, they would want their discussion and negotiations in an environment of confidentiality. It complicates the matter and as we have said before, some of the people have existing contracts and it makes the matter more sensitive and the requirement of confidentiality is an even more important one.”

A 10-member search committee including Bafana legends Benni McCarthy, Lucas Radebe, Farouk Khan, Clive Barker, Buti Mathathe, Neil Tovey, Chairperson of Safa technical committee Natasha Tsichlas, Safa vice president Elvis Shishana, Safa CEO Dennis Mumble and Jordaan is at the heart of the final decision.

Indeed Jordaan met Mashaba’s successor with Khan in his accompaniment in Lusaka and an announcement will be made soon enough.

However, some sources have pointed at Morocco head coach and two-time Afcon winning tactician Herve Renard who is renowned for wearing white shirts on the touchline during games.

Cameroon Afcon 2017 winning coach Hugo Broos, who has also been hugely linked to the Bafana job in the past weeks, is in Zambia to follow the Junior Indomitable Lions who were eliminated after losing 2-0 to Senegal on Sunday in Ndola.

According to Jordaan, Bafana caretaker coach Owen de Gama will name the provisional squad to face Guinea Bissau and Angola on March 11 as South Africa prepares for their Afcon 2019 qualifier against Nigeria in June.

“Both teams are coming to play in South Africa so the coach can decide to field two different teams to experiment, it is up to him. If the new Bafana coach is not on the bench, he can be in the stands and make up his mind on what he needs.”

Qualifying for the Fifa 2018 World Cup in Russia and Afcon 2019 in Cameroon is top priority for the new Bafana top man who will be supported in everywhere to achieve this, according to Jordaan.
