Heartland dream topflight comeback

Heartland chairman, Goodfaith Etuemena has restated the desire of the governor, Rochas Okorocha to have the side return to the top-flight in the shortest possible time.

The 2009 Caf Champions League finalists lost their top-flight status quo at the end of the 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Etuemena said it was the strong desire to have Heartland back to the elite league that made the governor to intervene to end the drift and rife in the team.

“The experience we had in this club recently was a very sad one but we want to assure you all that Heartland will resurrect.

“The governor’s desire is to have this team back in the premier league as soon as possible and that is why we are here.

“We must indeed thank the governor for his intervention to stop the crises in the team by ordering us to re-focus on bringing the team back to the premier league,” said Etuenema to supersport.com.

Etuemena said that the demand by the governor to have Heartland back to the top-flight has become a challenge to everyone that is associated with the team.

“Be you in management, coach, player or supporter, you have a role to play to bring this team back to the elite league where we rightly belonged.

“The coaches are under instruction to select players purely on merit and to design a winning strategy.

“Together we must all recommit ourselves to the progress of Heartland,” said Etuemena.

Goalkeeper, Ebele Obi said he and some other old players decided to stay back to help bring the team back to the premier league.

“We cannot just leave Heartland like that. We’re grateful to the governor for bringing back peace into the team.

“This is what we had been praying for. Now we have the old players with experience on their side and we also have young new players with a lot of energy.

“I think with this we can have a good team and that we can achieve the target,” said Obi.

The Naze Millionaires will campaign in the Nigerian second tier league, Nigeria National League (NNL).
