Celtic take aim at top three

Bloemfontein Celtic could rise to third in the Absa Premiership table if they can claim an away victory at Maritzburg United on Friday night.

This season has been chalk and cheese for the Free State side under coach Veselin Jelusic, having gone from relegation contenders in the previous campaign to vying for a place in the top four.

Celtic started the year well with victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows, and will be hoping for something similar against another KwaZulu-Natal opponent.

“Winning our first game of 2018 was thrilling for the fans and the players proved their seriousness in accumulating maximum points,” Jelusic told the club’s website.

“After a short break, I was impressed by the level of fitness of the players and it shows our players’ professional conduct and obedience in following the off-season programme that was given to them.

“We are ready. Our plan is to have a cautious approach making sure we don’t concede early, making sure we don’t lose our structure and subsequently utilising every opportunity given.”

Celtic netted just 16 goals in the entire league season in 2016/17, but find themselves one shy of that mark in this campaign with 14 matches to go.

“The positive thing is seeing goals scored, not only by our strikers, and I was also impressed by how the young Billy Maema responded after being thrown into the deep-end.

“Although we started well, we must continue sharpening our swords and making sure we score more goals. Our game against Arrows presented us with the chance to score an avalanche of goals but still we failed.”
