Sundowns swoop to take Lebese

Mamelodi Sundowns have swopped on another of the Soweto giants and bought George Lebese from Kaizer Chiefs after he asked to leaved the club.

It comes just a week after the Brazilians nabbed Oupa Manyisa from Orlando Pirates in two audacious blows on the eve of the start of the new South African season.

Chiefs first announced Lebese’s deal on twitter. “George Lebese has been sold to Mamelodi Sundowns. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” said the club.

Later the Chiefs website added: “George Lebese has been released for an undisclosed fee to join Mamelodi Sundowns. The Mamelodi born Lebese has been a Glamour Boy since 2008.”

“The deal was concluded this afternoon,” confirmed Chiefs’ football manager Bobby Motaung. “We’ve seen Lebese grow with us and we released him at his request. We are happy that the negotiations went well and an agreement has been reached with Sundowns.”

“Kaizer Chiefs do not stand in the way when the players express their desire to leave. It’s our policy. We thank Lebese for his contribution to the success of the team and wish him all of the best in his future endeavours,” he added.

But there was no word on the deal from Sundowns, who have also signed Ghana international goalkeepoer Razak Brimah in recent weeks.

Therefore there are no details yet on the terms of Lebese’s new contract.

Lebese, who is now 28. had a chequered time at Chiefs, often unable to fulfill potential and frustrating coaches with his inconsistency.

In the last eight seasons he has started 127 league and cup games and scored 28 goals. He won two league titles in 2013 and 2015.
