Wits crowned champs, Baroka bottom

The Clever Boys are now the Kings!

Round 29 of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season on Wednesday saw the title decided, with Bidvest Wits claiming their first PSL championship, but the situation at the bottom of the log remains up in the air ahead of the final set of matches.

The Clever Boys defeated Polokwane City 2-0 at Bidvest Stadium thanks to goals from James Keene and Daine Klate.

Combined with Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-2 draw at home to Maritzburg United, it was enough to secure the title for Gavin Hunt’s team.

Wits have become the seventh different championship winners in the PSL era, while Hunt has claimed a fourth title - adding to the three he won in 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 with SuperSport United.

Not only have Sundowns been dethroned, they are actually in danger of losing second place to Cape Town City, who are just a point behind the Brazilians after claiming a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows.

Down at the foot of the table, the only team to claim a win was Chippa United, who defeated 10-man SuperSport United 3-0 in the Eastern Cape thanks to a hat-trick from Rhulani Manzini.

The ‘basement battle’ between Baroka FC and Highlands Park ended in a goalless stalemate, as did the derby between Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

As a result, Baroka are bottom on 25 points, while Highlands are on 26 points, with Stars and Chippa on 27 and Celtic on 28.

Any of the five could yet finish in the automatic relegation place or enter the playoffs, depending on results on the final day of the season.

It was also a night to forget for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates - the former were beaten 2-0 at Platinum Stars to see their winless run extended to five matches, while the latter were held 0-0 at home by Ajax Cape Town and look likely to miss out on the top eight.

The season will wrap up with the final round of fixtures on Saturday, May 27.
