Football | Absa Premiership

Set pieces the decisive factor for City

Working on set pieces in the build-up to Wednesday’s top of the table clash in the Absa Premiership paid dividends for Cape Town City, said coach Eric Tinkler even though he was not pleased with the 1-1 score line at home to Bidvest Wits.

“I’m disappointed with the result and the players themselves in the changing room too,” he said after the clash at the Cape Town Stadium.

“I think we played well overall. In the first half we created a few chances but I don’t think we were positive enough. The way we conceded in the first five minutes also set us back. We knew what Wits were looking for coming here and that getting a point would be an ideal scenario for them.

“Giving away the early goal put a lot more pressure on the boys and there were periods in that first half where we struggled to find solution and find bodies. The movement wasn’t great,” Tinkler added.

“But Wits never troubled us. They were defending very deep and are a difficult team to break down. But we showed great character and we got our goal from a set piece which is something I hammered the players on in training this past week because in our last game against Platinum Stars we let two goals slip from set pieces. Tsepo got one for us, when he wasn’t even supposed to go up. But it was a good thing.”

Tsepo Gumede’s 71st minute equaliser was his first goal after Phakamani Mahlambi had opened the scoring for Wits with a fifth minute penalty.
