CTC top, Highlands out of danger zone

The weekend’s Absa Premiership action featured just four matches, but they had a big effect at both ends of the table, with Cape Town City claiming pole position, while Highlands Park moved out of the relegation zone for the first time this year.

The action got under way on Friday night with a cracking 2-2 draw between Ajax Cape Town and Free State Stars at Athlone Stadium.

Mohammed Anas both opened and closed the scoring, ensuring that Ea Lla Koto claimed a share of the spoils against an Urban Warriors side which remains winless in 2017.

Saturday’s first game saw Cape Town City rise to the top of the table, though coach Eric Tinkler won’t have been impressed with his side’s performance in a goalless draw away to Bloemfontein Celtic, who had new incoming coach Luc Eymael watching from the stands.

Kaizer Chiefs had the chance to move within a point of CTC at the top and appeared to be on course to do just that when they led 2-1 away to Baroka FC thanks to first-half goals from Erick Mathoho and Bernard Parker.

However, a superb solo effort from Mxolisi Kunene late in the game earned the hosts a deserved 2-2 draw.

Sunday’s match saw the only win of the weekend, with veteran Surprise Moriri’s header giving Highlands Park a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in Tembisa.

The result saw the Lions of the North move out of the relegation zone for the first time in 2017, while the Team of Choice remain in 10th spot.

The Absa Premiership will resume on the weekend of April 1-2 with a full set of eight fixtures.
