Wits move top, Pirates woes continue

Bidvest Wits have assumed the leadership of the Absa Premiership after claiming a 2-1 away win over Orlando Pirates, as a set of midweek fixtures wrapped up on Wednesday night.

The Clever Boys’ triumph – which came courtesy of two goals from Frank Mhango and saw the Buccaneers’ winless run extended to seven matches in the league – saw them jump to the top of the standings on goal difference ahead of Cape Town City.

SuperSport United could have been on top of the pile had they beaten Free State Stars away, but Stuart Baxter’s team could only draw 0-0 – and needed a strong performance from goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse to ensure they got that much from the game.

Elsewhere, Platinum Stars played to a fourth successive draw as they were held 0-0 in Polokwane by bottom-of-the-log Baroka FC.

The midweek action got underway with a Valentine’s Day clash between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns which ended in a 1-1 draw. Wayne Arendse opened the scoring for the Brazilians, but they were pegged back by a penalty from Rhulani Manzini.

The Absa Premiership will continue with five further matches played on Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend.

Tuesday 14 February

Chippa United 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns

Wednesday 15 February

Free State Stars 0-0 SuperSport United
