DiData braced for season-ending race

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka will end their 2017 cycling season at the Gree Tour of Guangxi. The inaugural Chinese World Tour event is set to get underway on Thursday 19 October, and will end after six stages on 24 October.

The team plans to send a well-rounded team to the final race of the year, as the opening three stages are suited to the sprinters, and the final three stages are more undulating and should provide options to the punchy classics type riders. Stage four is the only stage with an uphill finish, but the short, sharp nature of the climb could keep some of the sprinters interested.

The team will be led by Ryan Gibbons, who was on fine form the last time they raced in Asia, winning a stage and the overall at the Tour de Langkawi earlier this year.

About the race, Gibbons said, “I am really looking forward to racing the Tour of Guangxi. It will be my first-time racing in China and I have some fond memories of racing in Asia, so I hope to repeat some of those past performances.

“The team we have for Guangxi is strong and motivated, despite it being so late in the season. I am confident that we will be able to pull something off at the race.”

Joining Gibbons will be another stage winner from Langkawi, Mekseb Debesay. Debesay and Lachlan Morton will be key riders for the fourth stage, and then, throughout the week, Bernie Eisel, Jay Thomson, Daniel Teklehaimanot and Nic Dougall will be the firepower behind the protected riders.

As a World Tour event, a quality field is sure to be at the start, with a number of key sprinters already confirmed to race.
