England eager to get SA tour started

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday welcomed the world’s No 1 women’s cricket side, England, back to South African shores after a six year absence. The two teams meet for a three-match One Day International (ODI) and T20 clash beginning on Friday 21 October at Senwes Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.

England captain Charlotte Edwards is delighted to be back in South Africa after such a long time.

“South Africa is a place that I have always enjoyed playing in. Majority of our team haven’t played here and it’s an exciting place to come to for the first time,” she said.

“We know we are going to have a tough task ahead of us in the next couple of weeks against South Africa but it’s one we’re looking forward to,” Edwards continued.

The hosts are equally impatient to get things going. South Africa captain Cri-Zelda Brits is looking forward to test how her team’s preparations have panned out.

“We have been preparing for this tour for more than six months now. Everything we have done up to now has been aimed at this tour and I’m really looking forward to seeing how we fare against such quality opposition,” she said.

Game time is extremely important to both sides. England are using this tour to prepare for both the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Women’s World T20.

“For us as a team, it’s exciting to get together to play cricket because we don’t play as much as the men so every tour is vital in preparation for the two world cups that are approaching,” she stated.

South Africa will use this tour as the perfect training tool for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers taking place in Bangladesh in November of this year.

Brits believes that the tough opposition they will face in this tour will be priceless in terms of her team’s preparation for a spot in the World Cup.

“We will no doubt face some daunting cricket during this tour and we are really looking forward to it and being pushed to our very limits and beyond. We are confident in the structures we have put in place for this tour and now, it’s GO time,” she commented.

The series will run from 21 to 31 October.
