Malan, Fortuin star as Dolphins crumble

Opening batsman Pieter Malan fell agonisingly short of a fine double-century, as the WSB Cape Cobras climbed to a dominant 530 for eight declared on day three of a crucial, fourth-round Sunfoil Series fixture against the Warriors at PPC Newlands in Cape Town.

The rain that marred Monday and the cloudy skies that threatened Tuesday turned to bright sunshine on Wednesday, affording Malan plenty of time to relish a 25th first-class ton.

He struck 195 to fellow right-handers Justin Ontong, Aviwe Mgijima and Dane Piedt's complementary 69, 90 and 52 not out, respectively, as the hosts surpassed the formidable 347 all out achieved by the Warriors.

The visiting XI closed on a shaky 12 for one, still a staunch 171 runs in arrears.

WSB CAPE COBRAS: SM Khomari, PJ Malan, Zubayr Hamza, JL Ontong, A Mgijima, JF Smith, K Verreynne (wk), DL Piedt (capt), LB Williams, MA Cohen, M Nabe

WARRIORS: GVJ Koopman, EM Moore, CN Ackermann, MY Vallie, MJ Nqolo, JT Smuts (capt), M Breetzke (wk), SR Harmer, A Gqamane, BD Walters, T Bokako

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins capitulated to a mere 216 all out - and were made to follow on by the Multiply Titans at the City Oval in Pietermaritzburg.

The hosts then reached a resourceful 160 for two on the back of opener Sarel Erwee's resolute 88 not out, but remain 124 runs behind the opposition's hefty first-innings effort of 500 for six declared.

Double-centurion Dean Elgar and centurion Heinrich Klaasen were the mainstay for the Titans, who are currently at the top of the Sunfoil Series standings.

Legspinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Shaun von Borg bowled well in tandem - in trying conditions Titans head coach Mark Boucher described as "subcontinental-esque." Von Borg and Shamsi shared almost half the overs.

The latter, who recently returned from a one-match loan to the Warriors, was the standout bowler.

HOLLYWOODBETS DOLPHINS: S Muthusamy, SJ Erwee, VB van Jaarsveld, C Chetty, K Zondo (capt), DJ Vilas, MN van Wyk (wk), R Frylinck, P Subrayen, M Shezi, K Mungroo

MULTIPLY TITANS: AK Markram (capt), D Elgar, VB Mahlangu, H Klaasen (wk), H Davids, JD Vandiar, S von Berg, MP Siboto, C Bosch, T Shamsi, SA Mothoa

Bizhub Highveld Lions spinner Bjorn Fortuin's telling six-for reduced the VKB Knights to just 261 all out at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

Fortuin was well supported by fellow slow bowler Wihan Lubbe, who was a late addition to the XI after allrounder Wiaan Mulder was added to the Proteas squad for the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh.

Fortuin's outstanding six-for improved on his previous first-class best of 5-33.

The Lions had moved to a challenging 464 all out on Tuesday, on the back of solid centuries from opener Reeza Hendricks and middle-order kingpin Rassie van der Dussen.

Captain Stephen Cook followed suit in the second innings, striking a relatively quick 105 not out before declaring on a sizeable 198 for two.

Seeking 402 for triumph, the defending champions pushed to a promising 35 for one, but obviously would have preferred opener Grant Mokoena still be at the crease.

Instead, he perished early in the innings - and late in the day - to fast bowler Hardus Viljoen.

The experienced Luthando Mnyanda and talented Keegan Petersen will resume the pursuit of a further 367 runs on Thursday.
