Zondo aims to lead by example

Newly appointed South African 'A' 50-over Captain, Khaya Zondo, will look to replicate his 'lead by example' approach that worked so well when he took over the captaincy of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins team this season.

Zondo was named in both the 50-over and Four-Day squads, being handed the captain's arm band for the limited over SA 'A' team that will tour England in May and June.

"It is nice to know that from the little bit they saw of my leadership and captaincy, that they believe I can go higher and further with it. So it's nice to get that sort of recognition and it's nice to know that it is something they also looking to enhance in me," explained Zondo.

Having taken over the captaincy of the KwaZulu Natal franchise before the start of the Momentum One Day Cup, Zondo led with aplomb, scoring 349 runs at an average of 49.85 in 10 innings.

"I think my career and my life has always been one where there are challenges. I kind of enjoy it when there is a challenge, it makes things interesting and it brings out the best in me."

"It is nice to know that I was able to do the job with my discipline (batting). It makes the job to captain a lot easier, because the guys trust you a lot more as you not only say the right things, but you do the right things," said Zondo

Despite the Dolphins finishing fourth in the Sunfoil Series, Zondo placed fourth on the tournament run scoring charts courtesy of two hundreds and five fifties in 15 innings which led to a total of 740 runs at an average of 67.27.

The 2016-2017 season, whilst not a resounding success for the Dolphins, was a very good one for Zondo. His ability to perform with the bat allowed him to not only back up his captaincy, but so too prove his doubters wrong.

"Leading the Dolphins was a big thing for me and leading my team with my performances was a big highlight for me in general. I know a few people thought that I am not good enough or I don't deserve somethings that have come to me in the past, so it was also nice just to put that to bed," added Zondo.

With the SA 'A' tour around the corner, Zondo will be once again looking to let his actions speak as loud as his words in a bid to impress the Protea selectors.
