Mumbai crush Delhi

Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma both powered their way to half-centuries to propel the Mumbai Indians to a comprehensive 44-run win in their Indian Premier League match against the Delhi Daredevils at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Full Scorecard: Mumbai v Delhi

Karthik constructed a wonderful 86 off a mere 48 balls while Sharma weighed in with 74 not out off 50 deliveries as Mumbai posted a formidable 209 for five.

Delhi could only manage 165 for nine in reply despite a dashing fifty from David Warner as the Daredevils slipped to their third consecutive loss.

The 27-year-old Karthik was in sumptuous form and he was particularly strong on the leg-side while his innings was based on traditional cricket shots.

He did not have to resort to slogging to score his runs as he helped himself to 14 fours and two sixes before he was dismissed by paceman Morne Morkel (1-43) when the right-handed batsman sent a leading edge to Jeevan Mendis at mid-off.

Karthik brought up his second fifty of this year’s IPL off 29 balls while he shared in a 132-run third-wicket stand with Sharma.

So dominant was Karthik that Sharma scored just 23 runs off the first 100 runs of the partnership.

Sharma was content to play a supporting role but when Karthik was dismissed in the 15th over Sharma picked up the cudgels as he reached his half-century off 42 balls before scoring 24 runs off the next eight deliveries that he faced which included him thrashing three sixes off the last over of the innings, bowled by left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra.

Kieron Pollard (13) was caught at extra cover off the bowling of Nehra before Ambati Rayudu clobbered his way to 24 off just eight balls which included striking two sixes and two fours off the penultimate over of the innings bowled by left-arm quick Irfan Pathan (1-37).

Mumbai, after winning the toss and electing to bat, found themselves in early trouble as they slumped to one for two with the big-name opening pair of Ricky Ponting (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (1) both dismissed cheaply.

Ponting was caught at mid-off off the bowling of Pathan while Tendulkar was run out at the non-striker’s end after a direct hit from Mahela Jayawardene fielding at mid-off.

Nehra finished with figures of 2-49.

Delhi’s innings began poorly when Unmukt Chand (0) was wonderfully caught by a diving Ponting at mid-off off the first ball of the innings, bowled by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Jayawardene (3) departed soon after before Warner and Manprit Juneja seemed to rescue the innings with a third-wicket stand of 82 off eight overs.

The left-handed Warner brought up his eighth IPL fifty off 34 deliveries but three balls later he departed for 61 with five fours and four sixes when he was caught at deep point off the bowling of left-arm paceman Mitchell Johnson.

Warner departed with the score on 95 in the 11th over and he was soon followed by Jeevan Mendis (0) and Pathan (10) as Delhi slipped to 118 for five in the 15th over.

Lasith Malinga then caught and bowled Kedar Jadhav (1) as Delhi’s challenge faded away.

Juneja made his way to 49 off 39 balls but he was dismissed in the 18th over when he was run out at the keeper’s end by a direct hit from Rishi Dhawan fielding at midwicket.

Morkel struck a few lusty blows to end on 23 not out off just nine balls but it was not enough as medium-pacer Pollard ended with 2-35 while Johnson claimed 2-49 and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha picked up 2-34.
